What’s involved

Built for the daily grind

A garage floor cops more than any other slab at home. Here’s what goes into one that holds up.

Hot tyres, oil drips, dropped tools, wet shoes and whatever gets dragged in off the driveway: a garage floor takes all of it. Bare concrete soaks it up and stains. Garage paint sits on top of the slab and tends to lift where the tyres park.

An epoxy flake floor is built differently. The concrete is diamond ground to open up the surface, cracks and chips are repaired, then the floor is built up in layers: an epoxy base, a full broadcast of decorative flake, and clear coats over the top. What you end up with is one seamless surface from wall to wall that wipes clean instead of holding stains.

New slab or old slab

Both can be done. A new slab needs time to cure before it’s coated, because moisture coming up through fresh concrete is one of the most common reasons coatings fail. An older slab usually needs more work in prep: oil stains, cracks, old paint or sealer all have to be dealt with before anything goes down.

Picking a colour

Flake comes in a big range of blends, from light greys that brighten a garage up to darker mixes that hide the dirt. Browse the Ultra Flake and Hyper Flake colour charts, or upload a photo of your garage to the free colour visualiser and try a few on first.

The process

How a garage floor job runs

  1. Quote

Send through a few photos and the rough size of the garage. Quotes are free.

  2. Grind & repair

The slab is diamond ground to open up the surface, and cracks and chips are filled so the floor starts sound.

  3. Base & flake

The epoxy base coat goes down and flake is broadcast over it in the blend you picked.

  4. Clear coats

Loose flake is scraped back and clear coats seal the whole floor in.

  5. Cure

It needs time to cure before foot traffic, and longer again before you park on it.

Questions

Common questions

Straight answers. If yours isn’t here, ring Nathan on 0423 627 131.

How much does an epoxy garage floor cost?

It depends on the size of the garage, the condition of the slab and the flake blend, so every garage floor is quoted individually, and quotes are free. Send through a few photos and rough measurements and we can come back with a price.

Can you epoxy over an old, cracked or oil-stained garage floor?

Usually, yes. Cracks are repaired and the surface is diamond ground as part of prep, which removes surface staining and old coatings. Deep oil contamination can take extra work, so mention it when you send photos.

Will an epoxy floor lift from hot tyres like garage paint does?

A properly prepared epoxy flake system is much less prone to hot tyre lifting than garage paint, because it’s bonded to diamond ground concrete rather than sitting on top of an unprepared slab. That difference comes from prep, which is why it isn’t skipped.

How long before I can park in the garage again?

Not straight away. Epoxy needs time to cure before it takes foot traffic, and longer before it takes the weight of a car. Cure times depend on the products and conditions, so ask about the timing for your floor when you get your quote.

Is an epoxy flake garage floor slippery?

The flake gives the surface some texture, and slip resistant options are available if the floor regularly gets wet, for example if the garage is how you come inside out of the rain.
